Elle fréquente les prairies, forêts claires, éboulis, vergers, parcs et jardins. Abondante, on la rencontre facilement jusque dans les villes. Très commune en montagne. La chenille, polyphage, se nourrit sur les prunelliers, églantiers, pommiers, charmes, tilleuls, érables, aubépines, bouleaux... La femelle est aptère. La chrysalide hiverne dans un cocon.
