La plante nourricière, l'Ailanthe (Ailanthus altissima), fut plantée comme arbre d'ornement dans les parcs et les jardins des grandes villes ou Samia cynthia survit encore de nos jours. Elle se maintient dans trois zones principales : la région parisienne, la région bordelaise et l'Alsace. Période de vol : de mai à juin puis de septembre à octobre. Espèce univoltine ou bivoltine, selon la latitude.
